Artist Statement

My work often explores my own personal displacement as I navigate the multiplicity of my identity. Growing up closeted in a conservative muslim country, I use my work as a tool to unravel layers of my own particularity that have long been buried. Through this process, I began to understand the dichotomy of the cultural moral compass that ties directly into my personal identity as a queer trans individual. Namely, what’s considered morally right in one cultural context may not be so in another. Living in various cultural contexts, I often find myself being unable to relate to imposed norms, rules, and myths of my environment.

As a coping mechanism, I question the world around me and I scrutinize what is deemed acceptable or normal. I apply this aspect of my upbringing to my work, enabling me to create visual imageries that are deliberately “out of place” to convey the absurdity of complacency towards normality.

I am particularly interested in the complexity of identity, specifically gender, sexuality, and religion. Through the lens of my own personal experience, my work often explores how different aspects of one’s identity interact with each other. This can manifest in many different forms, from photography, video, performance, or installation; my work is a melodramatic exaggeration of my narrative to alleviate the camp aesthetic that describes the manifold aspects of my individuality.
